Hi everyone, welcome back to the newsletter. I’m getting ready to watch the Knicks tonight but wanted to highlight a few things on my radar this week before tip-off…
I also have some news coming soon, along with my big Tokyo menswear guide. Stay tuned!
1. Thom Sweeney’s Summer Line
As you know, I’m a Walton Goggins stan (who isn’t?) and I’ve been doing some digging around to find out what brands he wears. One of them is the British luxury menswear label Thom Sweeney—he wore a black Thom Sweeney notch lapel suit to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and a Shawl Lapel Dinner Suit to an event at the Guggenheim recently.
That led me to the Thom Sweeney website, and I liked what I found. I was only familiar with the brand by walking by the Soho store, but (no offense to brand) the window display doesn’t do it justice. It gave off a slim-fit-Italian-dad vibe, but the brand is way cooler than that: Saville Row-inspired with a weekend flare. (Goggins-esque, in other words.) I particularly love these Viscose Wide Leg Trousers (pictured above) and paired with the Linen Cut Away Collar Shirt. Walton would approve.
2. Easymoc’s Scout Boot
I’ve been obsessed with finding a pair of Russell Moccasin chukka boots since my conversation with vintage broker Austin Reynolds, who found his pair in Japan. I haven’t had any luck, but these Scout boots by Easymoc (available at American Trench) are pretty close to what I’ve been after. Both Russell and Easymoc are small U.S. brands (Russell from Wisconsin, Easymoc from Maine), although Russell has been around a lot longer. I’d go with the suede version (called Toast) for maximum versatility. Each boot is handmade with Vibram soles.
3. Loewe x On
My wife has been trying to get me into Loewe for a while now, and while the Spanish luxury brand is cool, I just can’t pay $1,100 for a pair of giant pants.
But these Loewe x On Running Cloudventure 2’s could be a way to dip one’s toes into the brand (although, it’s true, they are still super expensive). The shoes come in 7 different colors, but I like the yellow/tan pictured above. The ultra jacket in technical shell is also a nice outer layer for rainy day runs.
4. Matt Berninger in Todd Snyder
The National’s Matt Berninger has a solo album coming out, and the singer recently sat down for an editorial with Todd Snyder. Todd outfitted Berninger is a range of summer suits, and this is a good guide for how to dress for a wedding or other formal/semi-formal occasions in the warmer months.
There are some nice middle-age-white-guy looks in here—safe bets, and a step above a basic navy suit. I’m a huge fan of brown linen and I’m into the tan color block of Matt’s first look. You also can’t go wrong with a double breasted navy blazer, or an Italian check linen silk blazer and black jeans.
5. The Utah Mammoth’s Jerseys
I have to agree with GQ’s Matthew Roberson: The Utah Mammoth’s jerseys are awesome.
Weekly Inspiration: Pierce & Ward
Nikita and I are trying to freshen up our apartment (as much as we can—it’s a rental), and she’s always sending me inspiration on Instagram. It can be tough to find a style that appeals to both of us, but the L.A. designers Pierce & Ward is one outfit whose aesthetic does.
P&W has designed homes for Dakota Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Taylor Swift, among other celebrities, and focuses on natural colors, woods, and what they call the 80/20 rule: 80% vintage furniture, 20% new. I also love their use of tile and wallpaper.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend, and go Knicks!
Mitch
