Hey there,
The week got away from me and my planned-for Paris bar and restaurant roundup never materialized on the page. But I wanted to give you a little weekend style inspiration anyway, courtesy of the always-stylish actor Chris Pine.
(I also felt I should post this week because it’s actually Front of Book’s one-year anniversary. Thanks for reading and for your support. I hope you’re enjoying it so far. Here’s to another year.)
Chris Pine and the Art of the Tuck In
Nikita and I were walking up the steps of La Madeleine, an incredible cathedral in central Paris that should be on everyone’s checklist, when all of a sudden Chris Pine appeared before us. He had what looked like a film camera and was taking photos of a woman sitting at the base of a large Greek-like columns.
The funny thing was that I could tell he was a movie star even before I recognized who he was. Because of his outfit. He was wearing sunglasses; a light wash vintage denim shirt; perfect vintage Levi’s 501s; a pair of necklaces; and Birkenstocks. What tied the outfit together, though, was that the shirt was tucked in.
What was it about the tuck-in that made it a great fit? It’s that the shirt didn’t need to be tucked in. It’s that he took a simple style choice, associated most often with suburban dads coming home from the office, and made it look like Robert Redford in the 1970s.
It’s because by tucking in the shirt, it highlighted both the vintage denim shirt and the vintage jeans, put both in the spotlight instead of just one. It emphasized the perfect fits of each garment. The shirt was undone two button down (no undershirt) so you could see the necklaces, and the Birkenstock’s suggested he wasn’t trying too hard (even though of course he was, but that’s what great style is—appearing effortless).
Yes, the tuck-in worked because it wasn’t necessary—he was walking around the streets of Paris taking pix of what we later discovered was his girlfriend. He could have left it untucked, relaxed, easy. But he didn’t. He tucked it in. And he made the outfit… different, better… one befitting a movie star.
Great outfit, Chris Pine.

Have a great weekend. See you soon.
LET’S GO METS!
